The idea for Voices from the Pit came to me in a dream.
I cannot see myself but I am there, looking out at this expanse of a barren and brown landscape.

It is evening.

I hear cries and groans. I see quick flashes of dark caves and subterranean places.
There is a chasm on the face of the terrain. And I know there are people somewhere far below at the bottom of the earth in that chasm. I see someone – a creature, a misshapen human being. Or is it human?

I ask: What is going on here?
The creature says: These are people punished by the state. Those who have gone against the norm are thrown into the pit, and left there.

I still do not see myself but I seem to be flying and I am taken into the pit and through into its caves and labyrinths.

Write about us, says a creature.
And then I am awake.

Voices from the Pit was written within two days after that dream in 1995.
