Before I was filled with greed and selfishness
before I was absorbed in the ways of the world
for my own advancement;
and regardless of others;
and before I was entangled in envy, anger and desire;
and I was engrossed with words and sought the company
of those fluent with words and who hid their
own untruths and incompleteness with eloquence;
before I was centred in the comforts of the body
and the skin and the tongue and the mouth and the senses
persuaded and believing beyond there was nothing more
before I lived in this manner in deceit and lies
before thus was I, before Siva that was the way
Now with Siva in my mind
since with the name of Siva in my soul
there is only the mantra I live in;
this is the better way indeed, this is wholesome

Before there was deceit, there was illusion,
there was maya and there were ways of darkness;
before there was falsehood, enmity and calumny
before were lies, ways of pain and interminable cycles of anguish;
there was violence, reprisals and vengeance,
and pettiness, self-righteousness and the ways of the self
that elevated the needs of oneself
and subdues the wants of others; before there was
no beauty, no charm, no grace, no generosity, no discipline;
before the ways of the unjust prevailed,
the devices of the arrogant held sway;
now, with the name Siva in the mind,
since abiding in the presence of Siva
there is only peace, calm and purity
for there is only the name that abides:
Om Nama Shivaya

This is the better way indeed; this is wholesome.
